Atlanta mayor highlights AMSC’s 50th anniversary with rousing address to grads

Atlanta Mayor Andre Dickens helped Atlanta Metropolitan State College (AMSC) celebrate its 50th anniversary last week, in an event that coincided with the commencement ceremony for its Class of 2024. This milestone event took place on May 3 at AMSC’s Gymnasium, honoring the academic accomplishments of AMSC’s graduating students and commemorating five decades of excellence in higher education.


Established in 1974, Atlanta Metropolitan State College has been a beacon of academic achievement, community engagement, and opportunity in the heart of Atlanta. Over the past 50 years, AMSC has remained steadfast in its commitment to providing accessible, quality education to students from diverse backgrounds, empowering them to succeed in their academic and professional pursuits.


Dickens was the distinguished commencement speaker. The city’s 61st mayor is a champion of education and community empowerment, and embodies the spirit of progress and innovation that AMSC instills in its graduates.

AMSC President Ingrid Sellers said the school was “thrilled to celebrate the 50th anniversary of Atlanta Metropolitan State College alongside our graduating class of 2024. This milestone not only reflects our rich history and commitment to academic excellence but also our dedication to serving the Atlanta community.”


She praised Dickens “as his leadership and vision for a brighter future resonate deeply with our values and mission.”

The commencement ceremony was a memorable event, filled with reflection, celebration, and inspiration for graduates as they embark on the next chapter of their lives. Dickens’ address motivated and empowered the graduating class, encouraging them to continue striving for excellence and making a positive impact in their communities.
