Jenifer Lewis reprises 'The Princess and the Frog' role on 'American Idol'

“American Idol” audiences were given a surprise performance as actor-singer Jenifer Lewis reprised her role as Mama Odie from Disney’s Princess and the Frog in a spectacular Mother’s Day performance on the popular talent show. Disney has been eagerly preparing for the all-new Tiana’s Bayou Adventure, debuting at The Park on June 28 at Walt Disney World Resort Magic Kingdom. Jenifer Lewis’ and Terence Blanchard’s show-stopping performance was held in New Orleans to mark the occasion.

Fans of the Disney fairytale The Princess and the Frog will fondly remember Lewis’ rendition of the eccentric, sunny and wise old woman who has great power but ironically does not use it to grant wishes. She challenges Tiana and Prince Naveen to “dig a little deeper” inside themselves and encourages the same for all the individuals who seek her out looking for a “better” and magical life.

Besides Lewis’ performances, five-time Grammy award winner PJ Morton — who contributed to composing Tiana’s Bayou Adventure soundtrack — directed the famous New Orleans-based St. Augustine High School band. Morton is an alumnus of St. Augustine, so having the opportunity to return and lead the band in celebration of “American Idol’s” ode to Disney was special.

Tiana’s Bayou Adventure will add to the already popular Tiana’s Palace, a Disney-based restaurant that pays homage to New Orleans’ famous Creole and Cajun cuisine and celebrates the rich culture of the city as captured in The Princess and the Frog.
