Master P had aspirations of being a basketball pro, and he got as far as playing in the NBA with the Charlotte Hornets and Toronto Raptors in 1999. From the looks of it, Master P may be trying to find a way back into the pros, but not as a player.
The New Orleans native was recently asked about the Pelicans, who made it to the playoffs but were knocked out of the first round by the Oklahoma City Thunder. Despite the loss, Master P is optimistic about the future of the franchise.
“I think we got a great team,” Master P said to TMZ. “I just think that maybe we gotta wait a couple of more years.”
In fact, Master P had a better idea in mind, and he thinks it might help the Pelicans win the NBA championship in the next couple of years.
“Y’all need to put me on the coaching staff next year and we gonna win the whole thing,” Master P said.
This isn’t the first time that Master P has said that he wanted to coach the Pelicans. In 2021, he was stopped by TMZ and asked about the job.
“I think it’s about putting the right fit, the right people together. I think it’s time. The NBA is entertainment, I think it’s time for me to be the first hip-hop coach. I played in the NBA, I done [sic] coached a lot of great players that are in the league. I done [sic] took my sons from being high-school athletes to maybe they’ll be the next, future big-time pro athletes. I think it’s time for something different. I think that’ll be different, unique for the NBA,” he said.
“I know that I could show people like Zion (Williamson), all the great players that they have on that team, they need somebody that understand them. If they bring me in as a head coach, assistant coach, I think I could change the game.”
