“Not Congress turned into ‘Baddies’ last night,” X user @bgctea2020 posted, an account typically dedicated to blog-like gossip on reality TV stars.
This was the perfect explanation from the perfect source to explain what happened in Congress on May 16. Lawmakers were discussing Attorney General Merrick Garland refusing to release audio recordings of President Joe Biden‘s interview with Robert Hur. Hur recently said Biden was a “well-meaning elderly man with a poor memory,” according to USA Today. During the discussion, U.S. Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene, R-Ga., accused the Democrats of hiring the daughter of Judge Juan Merchan, who is overseeing the President Donald Trump hush money trial. Merchan’s daughter does work with many Democratic candidates, which makes her a target for Trump supporters.
“Please tell me what that has to do with Merrick Garland?” U.S. Rep. Jasmine Crockett, D-Texas, asked Greene. “Do you know what we’re here for?”
Then came the moment that was followed by three minutes of viral chaos.
“I don’t think you know what you’re here for,” Greene said, while pointing her index finger in Crockett’s direction. “I think your fake eyelashes are messing up what you’re reading.”
U.S. Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, D-N.Y., then immediately made a motion to remove Greene’s personal insult.
“That is absolutely unacceptable,” Ocasio-Cortez said. “How dare you attack the physical appearance of another person? Move her words down!”
As Ocasio-Cortez was speaking, Greene made another comment.
“Are your feelings hurt?” Greene asked Ocasio-Cortez. “Aww.”
“Oh, girl,” Ocasio-Cortez said. “Baby girl. Don’t even play. We are going to move, and we are going to take your words down.”
Greene said she’s not apologizing for her comment and then asked Ocasio-Cortez why she wouldn’t debate her. Greene eventually told Ocasio-Cortez she wasn’t intelligent enough to debate her. As Congress members tried to keep things somewhat tame, Crockett got her response in.
“I’m just curious to better understand your ruling. If someone on this committee starts talking about somebody’s bleach[ed] blonde, bad-built butch body, that would not be engaging in personalities, correct?” Crockett asked chairman Rep. James Comer, R-Ky.
The leaders then asked for order. Crockett was told to “calm down.”
“No, I’m not going to calm down,” Crockett said. “Because y’all talk noise and then you can’t take it. Because if I talk s— about her, y’all gone have a problem.”
