Black women voters will be a force to reckon with in upcoming elections

As the United States gears up for the 2024 elections, new polling data underscores the influential voting power of women of color, particularly within the Asian American and Pacific Islander (AAPI), Black, and Latina/x communities. This demographic is poised to have a significant impact on the political landscape, with a focus on issues that directly affect their lives and communities.

Top priorities for women of color

  • Reproductive justice and access to well-paying jobs
  • Affordable healthcare and maternal health
  • Cost of living and rising prices

For Black women, the fight against high maternal death rates, discrimination, and the need for criminal justice system reform are at the forefront of their concerns. These issues are not only personal but are also seen as areas where policymakers and politicians have fallen short in addressing their needs.

The power of the vote

Nearly 9 out of 10 women of color consider voting to be extremely or very important, viewing it as an effective tool for enacting change. This sentiment is reflected in their determination to influence the upcoming elections, with a focus on women’s rights, abortion, and the economic pressures of rising costs.

Seeking racial justice and representation

There is a growing perception among women of color that the country has deteriorated over the past year. They are calling for a leader who will tackle the long-standing issues of racism and establish systems of racial justice.

Unified for Change

Organizations such as the National Latina Institute for Reproductive Justice, National Asian Pacific American Women’s Forum, and In Our Own Voice: National Black Women’s Reproductive Justice Agenda are joining forces to harness the power of this influential voting bloc. Their goal is to ensure that women of color voters are not ignored and that their voices are heard loud and clear at the ballot box.

With a focus on reproductive justice, these organizations are advocating for elected officials to address the issues that matter most to their communities. They are prepared to support candidates who align with their vision for equity and justice for their families and future generations.

Survey insights

The survey, which included a national mixed-mode survey of 850 AAPI, 850 Black, and 850 Latina/x women registered voters, reveals the priorities and expectations of these voters. It serves as a reminder that women of color are a formidable force in American politics, one that candidates and parties cannot afford to overlook.
