Angel Reese becomes co-owner of DC Power Football Club

Angel Reese is only a week into her professional basketball career but is already the co-owner of another sports franchise.

Reese, who soared to national fame as the “Bayou Barbie” and led her team to the national championship over Caitlin Clark in 2023, has just acquired a piece of the DC Power Football Club, the women’s soccer team announced Tuesday. Reese currently plays for the WNBA’s Chicago Sky.

According to a statement acquired by The Athletic, Reese aspired to invest in a local team because she was born and raised in Baltimore, down the street from D.C.

The Power is one of the founding teams of the USL Super League, which begins its inaugural season this summer.

“Angel’s decision to be a founding investor alongside us in Power FC is groundbreaking,” Jason Levien, D.C. United CEO and Co-Chairman, added in a statement. “As a Maryland native, Angel is so passionate about being a catalyst for positive change in women’s sports in the DMV as well as globally, while inspiring the next generation of female athletes. We’re looking forward to her partnership in the boardroom as an equity partner.”

It is becoming trendy for the modern marquee athlete to acquire a piece of professional franchises:

  • Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes and his wife Brittany, a former collegiate and international pro soccer player, are part-owners of the National Women’s Soccer League’s Kansas City Current;
  • Former New England Patriots quarterback Tom Brady is part-owner of the Las Vegas Aces and is trying to buy into the Las Vegas Raiders ownership group;
  • NBA Hall of Famer Dwyane Wade owns some of the NBA’s Utah Jazz, while NFL superstar Aaron Rodgers has a small portion of the Milwaukee Bucks;
  • Serena Williams, who lived most of her adulthood in South Florida, acquired stock in the Miami Dolphins and the Angel City Football Club of the National Women’s Soccer League;
  • LeBron James owns part of the Boston Red Sox of MLB, Pittsburgh Penguins of the NHL, the Liverpool FC in England, and RFK Racing of NASCAR;
  • Magic Johnson is one of the pioneers in the athlete becoming a business owner. He owns part of the Los Angeles Dodgers of Major League Baseball, the Washington Commanders of the NFL, the Los Angeles Sparks of the WNBA, and the Los Angeles Football Club of Major League Soccer.
