Ciara stands by Serena Williams amid online criticism over appearance

In a show of solidarity and friendship, singer Ciara has taken a protective stance for her friend Serena Williams by disabling comments on a viral video that sparked unwarranted criticism of the tennis icon’s appearance. The video, intended to showcase the playful bond between the two stars, led to a wave of negative remarks about Williams’ looks — prompting Ciara to take action.

Unwanted attention on social media

The TikTok video in question captured Ciara and Williams sharing a light-hearted moment after a girl power event, which quickly turned sour as online commentators dissected Williams’ appearance. Despite the disabling of comments on the original post, the conversation continued across other social media platforms, with some users making harsh and unfounded judgments about Williams’ facial features.

Support for Serena Williams

Williams — who has faced scrutiny over her appearance in the past, including comments about her skin tone and makeup choices — has consistently affirmed her pride in her Black identity. The criticism reached a peak following her appearance at the Met Gala, where her choice of attire and makeup were met with disappointment by some observers.

However, not all feedback was negative. Ciara’s post from the same event drew praise for Williams, with fans celebrating the beauty of both women and recognizing them as “two beautiful Black queens.” This dichotomy of responses highlights the ongoing challenges Black women face in the public eye, where their appearance is often subjected to intense and unfair scrutiny.

Standing against anti-Blackness and transphobia

The issue transcends mere celebrity gossip, touching on deeper societal problems of anti-Blackness and transphobia. Critics have pointed out that the negative attention Williams receives for her features — such as her dark skin, hair texture and muscular build — is rooted in these pervasive prejudices.

As Williams and Ciara navigate the complexities of public life, their experiences underscore the importance of support and genuine friendship in the face of relentless public judgment. The solidarity shown by Ciara serves as a powerful reminder of the strength found in unity, particularly within the Black community.

    1. Boy is ignorance keeping God busy. People watch your tongue and actions from stepping on someone’s heart. Learn to keep your mouth shut if you don’t have something nice to say.

    2. Absolutely…they mock us and turn around and go buy the parts or the features they critized on you…madness.

  3. The people who take the time to hurt others are people who are hurt. They have no Soul and are Miserable. Sisters stand strong, Hold your own. It’s because you are beautiful and they don’t see it in themselves.

  4. I just looked at it. First off, more tasteful than half the outfits there. Second, you aren’t doing the Met Gala right if it isn’t a little weird and edgy. That was pretty mild.

    1. I, definitely agree! Serena Williams is a Beautiful Black Queen. She is smart, talented, fine and gorgeous. People who find time to criticize others are plain jealous and need to get life! The haters wish they had it like Serena! Next time you decide to criticize someone, please take a look in the MIRROR.

  5. 1. Yes my Brother, your words ring loud and clear. After all these years, we still have to deal with ” The Race Within” I think I need to write a book about it, it’s so sad!

      1. Coming from a man, his comments should be taken as REAL 💯 FACTZ! I’M TIRED OF BLACK WOMEN BERATING OTHER BLACK SISTAS. STAY BLESSED. THANK YOU SIR 🙏🏽

  7. Black is beautiful and this Black Queen has done a lot for tennis and the black community its a damn shame we are not all rallying around her she is a hero to so many young girls especially the black ones..

  8. Some things are better left unsaid. A d empty barrels makes the most noise. You are beautiful and content in your own skin Serena so let haters be haters. They just wish they had your life. Keep on doing you and loving you, you are not here to please anyone but yourself. Some ppl just need to find something productive to do and stop hating on others. We love you girl continue to love yourself cause on then others will live you and see the beauty in your imperfections which we all have.

  9. Amen. We slaughter each other as a race and it’s ridiculous. God made us in His own image and He don’t make mistakes. STOP IT!!

  10. I think it’s sad we are so critical of our own. Remember the struggles of our ancestors and those that are still in areas where we are looked at as “less than”, we should continuously be in a frame of mind to celebrate those that have work hard and made it to the top. Look beyond the physical and celebrate the fact that another made it! She earned her spot! Appreciate that!!

  11. Serena has accomplished & superceded UNBELIEVABLE HEIGHTS 🏆 🏆 🏆 🏆 🏆 🏆
“GO OUTDO HER…THEN COME RESPOND NEGATIVELY” 💣

  12. BS…we don’t get to cherry pick the aspects of societal norms that we feel benefits us. Gotta take the good with the bad. This “don’t judge…mind your business” narrative is crazy. It’s not realistic. Serena obviously has issues with her appearance and on top of that she’s a public figure. People are going to talk.

  13. The people who make negative remarks about someone’s appearance are most likely unattractive…out of shape…not good looking…lonely…jealous…envious…hateful…racist…miserable or just plain nasty…pay them no mind and keep being beautiful.

  14. First of all. I LOVE tennis. BJK was my first idol and will always be. I don’t care or is it my business who she’s married to or what she wears. And Serena Williams is another woman I admire greatly, since she and her sister Venus first appeared on the courts. We watched these two phenoms go from braces and beads to two tennis and fashion icons. Maybe I don’t always like what they wear but who cares? I appreciate their talent and their confidence and their inspiration to girls and women everywhere. So take your nasty comments and go away.

  15. As a race, we should treat one another better. Never will understand how a group of beautiful people with heart’s of gold could be so bound & determine to ruin & destroy their own race.So sad.

  16. Love is the strongest power in the world. God said to love, yet some still know not love. It tells the world which direction you’ve chosen, and we all know that being evil is easy, but being kind takes purity if heart. Repent!! For your outlandish words of evil is attacking the Lord as well. Let one and all stop being foolish, and judgemental, for God is in control!!! And HE is the rewarder of good and of evil. The LORD has said ” revenge is mine” saith the Lord.
