According to a new study, taking the stairs is a natural method for improving heart health and life longevity.
Research came out from the European Society of Cardiology, according to ScienceDaily, and a study of nearly 500,000 people showed a link between climbing stairs and a reduced chance of dying from any cause. The study also revealed there was a correlation between taking the stairs and lowering the risk of cardiovascular tragedies like suffering a heart attack or stroke. According to Health, the study should only be observational, as it hasn’t been published in a peer-reviewed journal.
The researchers reviewed nine studies about the correlation between climbing the stairs and cardiovascular disease and premature death. Approximately 480,479 participants were all either in good health or had a previous history of a heart attack or another heart disease. The ages ranged from 35 to 84, with 53% of the participants being women.
The group of researchers found that people who climbed stairs as a form of exercise had a 24% lower risk of dying from any cause than non-stair climbers. People who climbed stairs also had a 39% lower chance of dying from cardiovascular disease, which includes heart attacks, high blood pressure, and strokes. Cardiovascular disease is the leading cause of death worldwide.
