Black women are finding a new and creative outlet for stress relief and self-expression through LEGO building, a trend that’s gaining popularity on platforms like TikTok. This growing subculture is not only about fun and relaxation but also taps into the mathematical and engineering skills involved in the construction of intricate LEGO sets.


LEGO: A creative and calming hobby

For many, LEGO bricks are synonymous with childhood playtime, but for a growing number of Black women, they represent a calming and creative hobby. Jazmine Towe, a LEGO enthusiast, shared with NBC News how LEGO building serves as a soothing activity that brings joy upon completion of a set, while also looking forward to the next build.


LEGO building is recognized for enhancing spatial reasoning skills, a point highlighted by Amy Shelton, Director of Research at the Johns Hopkins Center for Talented Youth. The LEGO Group has also expressed excitement about the engagement of Black women with their products, acknowledging the creativity and inspiration that the Black community brings to the LEGO world.

Several Black female LEGO builders have gained attention on TikTok, showcasing their impressive collections and builds. From floating shelves displaying LEGO creations to intricate models of cars, musical instruments, and even floral arrangements, these enthusiasts are proving that LEGO is more than just a toy — it’s a form of art and therapy.
