Anthony Edwards hears all of the talk.
Recently, Adidas put out a new commercial starring the 22-year-old Atlanta native who prides himself on not being an active social media user. In the spot, Edwards is putting up jump shots in a dark peach-colored room, the same colorway as his AE 1s, his first signature shoe with the brand.
As he’s putting up shots, some one is next to a receipt machine, reading comments doubting Edwards. The machine is a play on the slang of “keeping receipts” when someone publicly shares their take on a topic.
The first comment came from NBA great Carmelo Anthony. Anthony said he didn’t know if Edwards could become the face of the NBA and they were using the term too loosely.
“Okay,” Edwards said.
The next comment came from Cam’ron, rapper and co-host of the sports show, “It Is What It Is.”
“To me, he’s an All-Star, but not a superstar, yet,” Cam’ron’s comment read.
Edwards laughed before putting up another shot.
“F— buddy,” Edwards said.
“It is what it ain’t,” Edwards’ friend said after reading Cam’ron’s comment, another play on words, referencing his sports show with Ma$e and Treasure “Stat Baby” Wilson.
The commercial came out right after Edwards and the Minnesota Timberwolves were eliminated in five games by the Dallas Mavericks in the Western Conference Finals.
“This only the beginning,” Edwards said, “because I’m not who they think I am.
“I’m better. Believe that.”
