Tyla thinks the Britney Spears comparisons are “getting boring now.”
When the singer released the music video for her track “Water” last October, fans were quick to point out the racy visuals were similar to Spear’s iconic “I’m A Slave 4 U” video from 2001.
Tyla didn’t appreciate the comparison then, and she’s now getting frustrated with the continued references to Spears when people discuss her.
“Honestly, when people bring up these references, most of the time there was never a reference. It’s never, ‘Make the video look completely like this.’ It’s getting boring now,” she said during an interview with Dazed & Confused Magazine.
The “Overdue” hitmaker emphasized she and her team try to innovate with her music videos. She added she likes to surround herself with people who have “new and fresh ideas.”
“We have so many cool things of this time, new creatives. I just love working with people who have new and fresh ideas,” she said.
Tyla then highlighted the choreography is rarely preplanned and is instead simply a group of “random people” expressing themselves “in the moment.”
“Even the dances that we come up with, it’s literally random people who just did something they felt in the moment which just caught on and now the world is doing it,” she explained.
In March, the singer released her debut studio album Tyla, which included contributions from the likes of Travis Scott, Becky G, Gunna, Tems and Skillibeng.
After releasing the Grammy-winning LP, Tyla had planned to go on tour, though was forced to put those plans on hold when she suffered an undisclosed injury.
The South African artist insisted she was in no hurry to hit the road and added she felt she needs to “take [her] time” to ensure she fully recovers.
“I’m still listening to my body. I think I need to take my time, not rush. I want to give people art and good performances, but I need to listen to my body and what I need,” she said.
