Tennessee State University’s athletic director pushes for facility renovations

Mikki Allen, the athletic director at Tennessee State University (TSU), has presented a compelling vision to the university’s Board of Trustees, emphasizing the need for renovating athletic facilities to enhance revenue generation for the university’s athletic departments.

Strategic renovations for revenue generation

Allen’s proposal includes constructing revenue-generating buildings on campus, which would help alleviate the financial pressures on the athletic department. He highlighted the importance of facilities that could support the various athletics programs and contribute to the university’s financial stability.

Improving campus facilities

The plan calls for refurbishing the Ed Temple Track and modernizing the Gentry Center, home to TSU’s basketball teams. Allen suggests that upgrades such as current generation LED technology and media boards could attract sponsorships and enhance revenue potential.

Focus on housing and community

Allen also underscored the significance of constructing adequate housing on campus, addressing the concerns of family members who entrust the university with their young adults’ well-being. He believes that improved housing is a key factor in the decision-making process for prospective students and their families.

Gradual approach to stadium construction

Advocating for a phased approach to building a football stadium, Allen emphasized the need for mixed-use facilities to host non-sporting events, ensuring ADA compliance and the possibility of using a turf field to maximize the stadium’s utility.

Community and institutional support

Understanding the magnitude of the investment required, Allen is seeking the support of the institution and the broader TSU community to revitalize the athletic programs and restore their former glory.

Continued progress under Allen’s leadership

Since becoming athletic director in 2020, Allen has overseen significant developments, including the historic appointment of Duanté Abercrombie as head coach of TSU’s pioneering hockey program, the first at an HBCU. His current efforts align with the progress made during his tenure at the university.

Allen’s vision for Tennessee State University’s athletic facilities is not just about physical improvements but building a sustainable future for TSU athletics and its community.
